BH 8The night watch
  • Guarding is honor, not fear. A positive mitzvah to guard the Temple even with no enemy or thief - a palace with guards is more glorious than one without; abandoning the watch breaks a negative command. (8:1-3)
  • 24 posts, every night. Priests stood at 3 stations inside; Levites at 21 outside - the gates, the corners, and behind the Holy of Holies. (8:4-9)
  • The officer of the Mount. He circled all night with torches; a guard found asleep could be beaten - even have his clothing burned. (8:10)
  • Dawn opening. Before first light the overseer took the keys, and two torch-bearing parties swept the Courtyard east and west until they met: "Peace unto you - everything is at peace." (8:11-12)
Remember24 posts each night - priests at 3, Levites at 21 - a guard of honor, not of fear.
KH 1The anointing oil
  • One batch in history. Moses compounded it - 500-shekel weights of musk, cinnamon, and costus, 250 of fragrant cane, in a hin of olive oil - and no other batch was ever made or will be until Mashiach. (1:2, 1:5)
  • Duplicating it is kareis. Compounding oil to this formula, or anointing an unauthorized person with an olive-sized amount, is punishable by spiritual excision. (1:4-6)
  • Who is anointed. Only the High Priest, the priest anointed for war, and Davidic kings - a king by a spring, so his reign flow on; a king's son is not anointed at all unless the succession is contested. (1:7, 1:11)
  • Vessels are sanctified by use. Only Moses' vessels were anointed; ever after, a vessel becomes holy by serving. Broken ones are resmelted into new - "poverty has no place where wealth belongs." (1:12-15)
RememberOne oil, made once - hidden with the Ark, waiting; copy it and the penalty is kareis.
KH 2The incense
  • Eleven spices. Four named in the Torah (balsam, onycha, storax, frankincense), the rest a halachah to Moses from Sinai - 368 maneh a year: one for each of the 365 days, and 3 reground for Yom Kippur. (2:1-3)
  • Made in holiness. Compounded only inside the Courtyard from consecrated ingredients, the grinder chanting "grind thoroughly, grind thoroughly" as he works. (2:5-6)
  • Exacting formula. A drop of honey disqualifies it; omitting one spice carries death; making it for your own fragrance is kareis - even a half-measure. (2:8-9)
  • The Golden Altar and the Ark. Nothing but this incense may go on the Golden Altar; and the Ark is carried on shoulders only - never a wagon - its staves never drawn from their rings. (2:11-13)
Remember11 spices, 368 maneh - 365 days plus 3 for Yom Kippur. Honey ruins it; a missing spice is deadly.
