The Schemer and the Sinner

The Sages judged a man who schemed around the law more harshly than a man who broke it outright: the open transgressor may eat his food, the clever one may not. This chapter builds the eruv tavshilin, an olive-sized portion of food that lets a whole city cook for Shabbat on a festival, and then teaches what festival joy actually is - and whose rejoicing is only the rejoicing of his gut.
