The Last Gate and the First Cut

Today the Rambam walks us across a threshold. The final chapter of forbidden foods closes the door on what may not be eaten. The first chapters of Shechitah open a new question entirely: not what is forbidden, but how life must be taken so that eating becomes an act of sanctity rather than mere consumption.

About This Talk

Maachalot Asurot chapter 17 concludes the laws of forbidden foods with rules about gentile cooking and utensils, the last barriers between the Jewish kitchen and the outside world. Shechitah chapters 1 and 2 then open the laws of ritual slaughter, establishing its biblical origin, who may perform it, and the instruments required. The transition is profound -- from prohibition to obligation, from avoidance to sacred action, from the passive discipline of not eating to the active discipline of how one takes life in order to sustain it.
